Getting to the UCL area
The cheapest, fastest way of getting from Heathrow Airport to central London is on the underground railway public-transport system (`the tube'). The Piccadilly line (the only line that goes to Heathrow) has trains running every 5 minutes or so, and reaches central London in less than an hour, at a cost of 3.20 pounds. There are many interchanges with other lines in the central region; the nearest Piccadilly-line station to UCL is Russell Square (a map of the underground train network can be downloaded for reference). Coach services also run between Heathrow, Gatwick, and central London (see below).
Travel from Gatwick Airport to central London is best done by main-line train (to Victoria station), followed by underground train or taxi. (There is an underground station at Victoria, and a taxi rank.) Two competing train companies service the Gatwick-Victoria route; the differences in price and travel time are slight, and you should simply ask for a ticket for the first train to arrive at Victoria (which is not always the first train to leave Gatwick).
Travel from Stansted Airport to central London is by main-line train (the `Stansted Express') to Liverpool Street station; it may be more convenient to disembark early, at Tottenham Hale (in outer London), for direct transfer to the Victoria Line on the underground, which runs direct to Euston and Warren Street.
If you are arriving anywhere else, contact Ian Howarth for help if necessary.
We remind participants that we will provide coach transport from UCL to Cumberland Lodge (and return). The coach will leave UCL from outside the `Central Collegiate Building' (otherwise, and more readily, identifiable as the `Bloomsbury Theatre') at 10:30 a.m., with a pickup at about 11:30 at Heathrow (Terminal 1, Arrivals, West Door). On Thursday, the coach leaves the Lodge at 9:30 a.m., to arrive at UCL around 11:00; there will be a dropoff at Heathrow at about 10:30. The Bloomsbury Theatre is in Gordon Street, which runs along the back of the main UCL block; the pickup point is shown on our map.
Further details on public transport in London are available here, and UCL provides an interactive tube (underground-train) journey planner. There is a tailored `Boulder-Munich' map of the UCL area here, and more general maps are available here.
It is rather difficult to get to Cumberland Lodge (almost impossible without car transport of some description). The following details are provided for those who prefer to make their own way to the Lodge, but overseas visitors, in particular, are advised to make use of the coach transport from UCL provided by the organizers.

AIR |
Heathrow Airport
is about 20-30 minutes by car from Cumberland Lodge. Taxis can be booked in
advance from the above list, and should cost around 15-20 pounds; a cab from
the airport will otherwise cost roughly twice as much. The conference
organizers will book taxis on request, given flight details.
Coach services also run between Heathrow, Gatwick, and central London
(see below). Travel from Gatwick Airport to Cumberland Lodge is not straightforward. One possibility is to take the (overground) main-line train into central London (Victoria station), followed by a tube journey to Waterloo and thence to Egham by a second overground train (buy a through ticket for Egham at Gatwick). A more straightforward option is to take airport link coach to Heathrow, and to travel from there by taxi. A taxi direct from Gatwick to Cumberland Lodge is expensive; if booked through one of taxi agencies listed above the fare is 45-50 pounds, and the journey should take around an hour. Heathrow and Gatwick are connected by frequent coach services. Speedlink provide a `luxury' service which runs every 15 minutes in the morning and every half-hour in the afternoon, with pickups at Heathrow Terminals 1, 3, and 4. Their economy Jetlink coaches run every half hour throughout the day, and pick up at the bus station and Terminal 4. The trip takes around 1h 15m, and costs 11 or 16 pounds (Jetlink or Speedlink).
