This involves infrared observations and laboratory studies of terrestrial minerals for comparison with the astronomical data.
I have studied (in chronological order) molecular-cloud and diffuse-medium interstellar dust and the dust around newly forming stars at the University of Central Lancashire with Andy Adamson (now at UKIRT). Mike Barlow (UCL), Jeremy Yates (UCL) and I are looking at new dust formed around evolved stars.
My laboratory studies
include infrared spectroscopy of terrestrial minerals at room and cryogenic
temperatures. I am collaborating with members of the Astronomical
Instrumentation Group which is now at Cardiff Universitylink
(Carole Tucker, Clare Lee and Peter Ade), and Anne
Hofmeister at the Department
of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Washington University.
