Dear Ajig,

One of the purposes of the homily at Mass is to show and develop
the relation among the readings. The Lectionary for Mass says:

"Three readings are provided for each Mass: the first from the
Old Testament, the second from the writings of the apostles (from
an epistle or from the Book of Revelation...) and the third from
the gospel. This arrangement best illustrates the basic unity of
both Testaments and of the history of salvation ... The Old and
New Testaments readings best harmonize when their relationship is
self-evident, that is, when the events and teachings of the New
Testament are more or less explicitly related to those of the Old.
The Old Testament readings in this lectionary have been chosen
primarily because of their relationship to the New Testament
selections, especially the gospel reading."
Introduction, pp. XVII-XVIII.

Sincerely in Christ,
Father Mateo

- Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit -
