Dear Bill,
Never have I encountered the expression, "liturgical day".
Canon 1248, 1 says: "The obligation of participating in the
Mass is satisfied ... either on a holyday itself or on the
evening of the PREVIOUS DAY" (emphasis added). I think this
means the obligation can be satisfied on the evening of the
previous CALENDAR day, i.e., Saturday evening does not form
one "liturgical day" with Sunday.
Therefore, your conclusion is correct: "If a calendar day is
meant, someone could go to morning Mass on Saturday and a
vigil Mass for Sunday and still be able to go twice on
Sunday.
Sincerely in Christ,
Father Mateo
