Dear Patrick,
The proper way to genuflect is this: keeping the upper body erect
(straight-up-and-down), bring the right knee all the way down to the
floor beside the left heel; then rise straight up to a standing
position. One may hold on to the back of the chair or pew if
necessary for stability.
Genuflection is not an athletic event. Middleaged muscles may not
take you all the way down to the floor, but the genuflection ought not
to be either a crouch or a bow. If one cannot genuflect gracefully,
then bow instead. A deep bow is preferable to a graceless dipping
toward the floor.
Genuflection in the Latin rite is our profound sign of bodily
reverence in the presence of Jesus truly present in the Blessed
Sacrament. It is the body's act of worship and adoration.
In my next message, I will try to answer your question about Our
Lord's real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament.
Sincerely in Christ,
Father Mateo
