Msg Base: AREA 5 - ASK FATHER CIN ECHO AMDG Msg No: 253. Mon 3-09-92 22:07 (NO KILL) (MAILED) From: Father Mateo To: Bryan Gardner Subject: Hail, Holy Queen. +- | Father, | In RCIA we are learning about the Rosary. The question was asked as to | the origin of the Hail, Holy Queen. No one there knew the answer and I | was hoping you might know. | | Thank you for your help. | | Bryan +-[BG=>FM] Dear Bryan, The hymn "Hail Holy Queen", is of disputed origin and authorship. It is variously attributed to several different people. The most likely candidates are: 1) Pedro Martinez, bishop of Compostela, died 1000; 2) Herman the Cripple, monk of the abbey of Reichenau, died 1054; 3) St. Bernard of Clairvaux, died 1153. Its first well attested use in the liturgy is in France at the Abbey of Cluny in 1135. Sincerely in Christ, Father Mateo
